Motion

The logo animation, and how everything else moves

Where a page signs off, the logo plays its own animation, the 2025 film, and the name settles beside it. Everything else moves by a few rules, each piece once, as it is reached; nothing loops but the opening photographs, and everything is still for people who ask for less motion.

The logo animation

The 2025 film, as made

Two strokes appear, turn like rings and open into the two loops. It is the original film from the site’s storage, never redrawn. Where a page signs off it plays once and rests on the mark, and the name settles beside it.

A researcher adjusts a microscope at a bright bench.

The reveal

expo.inOut, 1.25s

Photographs open upward from their bottom edge and settle from 118% over 1.8s. Headlines rise line by line from behind their own mask; text rises 24px and fades in.

A researcher at work in a long, open laboratory.

The drift

linear, with the scroll

Large photographs move up to 5% slower than the page, so the page has depth without anything moving on its own. The home page’s opening photographs crossfade every 2.6 seconds.

Color

Lavender, Deep and Night

Lavender is the signature: the logo’s own ground, and with pale Sky the blocks behind photographs that give a page its depth. Deep is the mark’s blue; it closes every page and holds the footer. Night is the ink. Most of every page is white, and color comes in solid blocks, never gradients.

The signature color: the ground for the logo, and the blocks behind photographs that give a page its depth.

#0E3B5E · RGB 14, 59, 94

The mark’s own blue: the close of every page, the footer and the signature in it. A ground, never a text color on the site.

#0D1821 · RGB 13, 24, 33

The ink: headlines, text, buttons and the lockup in the header.

#FFFFFF · RGB 255, 255, 255

Photography

Real work, in clear light

Laboratories and the people in them, at work: hands and instruments, two people over a result, a corridor between rooms. Every photograph is graded the same way, cool and clear, so the library reads as one set.

Gloved hands draw a sample with a pipette inside a culture hood.
Two scientists in lab coats talk through a result.
A gloved hand holds a culture plate with colonies growing across it.
Two researchers read a protocol as they walk a bright laboratory corridor.

Photographs over color

A photograph laid over a block of Lavender or pale Sky that runs out to the edge of the page. Every inner page opens with one, and rows of them carry the services and the approach. It is how a light page gets its depth.

  • The block starts a third of the way under the photograph and drops below it, and it always reaches the page edge.

  • Lavender or pale Sky, alternating down a page. Never Sand, never a gradient.

  • A 3px Deep rule underlines the frame.

  • Rows alternate sides; the words sit beside the block, never on it.

  • In motion the block grows in from the page edge, the photograph opens over it, then the rule draws across.

Charts from the bench

Bio’s charts borrow the lab’s own forms (plate maps, colonies, pressure lines, linked rings, gel lanes, dose curves, pipelines) and color them like a slide, in six stains led by the logo’s own pair. Every value on this page is a placeholder.

The stains

Prussian is the mark’s Deep at chart strength and Cresyl is Lavender at full strength, so every chart opens on the logo’s own pair. The first four can share any chart and stay distinct for every reader, including those with color blindness. Picric and Methylene join only where each color sits beside the next. Always in this order.

Amounts

Cresyl, one hue, light to dark. All nine steps for wells and cells, which carry an outline; bars, lines and dots start at the fourth.

Change

Carmine below, Prussian above, a lavender grey for no change.

Rules

  • Marks are thin and square-ended; only wells, colonies and rings are round.

  • Hairline axes and grids; values in the text ink, at the ends of their marks.

  • A legend for two series or more, and a table or a value for every mark on request.

  • Each color follows its series, never its rank; a seventh series folds into “Other”.

  • Charts grow once as they are reached, their marks 55 to 110ms apart.

Status

On trackAt riskStopped

Kept for status, never a series, and always with its word.
