Lab Space and Partner Labs for Early-Stage Biotech

Early-stage biotech companies can reach the bench without building a lab by working with partner labs, shared lab spaces and specialist service providers. The choice depends on the method, the materials, how much of the work the team does itself, and how the results will be used.

The Options

Shared lab space gives a team its own bench time with common equipment. Partner labs, including academic core facilities, bring specialist methods and staff. Contract research organizations run defined studies to an agreed protocol. Many companies use a mix, matched to each stage of the research plan.

Choosing a Lab for Each Study

We match the work to the setting: the techniques and models required, the quality standard the data has to meet, the handling of materials and samples, timelines, and cost. For studies that later work will build on, documentation and data standards matter as much as the result itself.

Managing the Work

Placing a study is the start, not the end. We agree scope and protocols, keep to the plan as work runs, review data as it arrives, and make sure what comes back is complete enough to use in a data package, a filing or a partner discussion.

Common Questions

  • Do we lose control of our research by working with outside labs?

Not with a clear plan and agreements. The company sets the questions, criteria and data standards, and owns the results under terms agreed before work begins.

  • Where are the labs located?

We choose labs for the method and the stage of the work rather than geography, and work with teams across the United States from Mt Pleasant, South Carolina.
